Message Body: * I wanted to let you know today about Tom Torlakson and why I am strongly supporting his campaign for State Superintendent of Public Instruction during the run-off election on November 2. This position is the key position for the leadership of our troubled schools and for the education our children need to compete in the 21st Century economy. Tom has been a science teacher and high school coach for 25 years and currently teaches at Los Medanos Community College. He is fighting for our kids and for reforming the way public education works in California. Tom has fought to improve academic achievement for college readiness and career readiness, to prepare our students for the work world through career and vocational education. He is a leader in fighting the terrible dropout rate. After working as a fireman in the Merchant Marine and graduating from UC-Berkeley, Tom's journey has led him from the classrooms of Contra Costa County's Mount Diablo Unified School District, to the Antioch City Council, Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, and the California State Senate and State Assembly. He knows how to get all levels of government to work together for our children and families. Tom championed legislation to bills to enhance campus safety, improve student health, close the achievement gap and increase funding for computers and textbooks. Tom has authored legislation to improve the safety of our children and students—including landmark legislation to regulate amusement park rides, to improve reporting of sexual assaults and other crimes against children, combat hazing, and to provide for 4,000 after school programs throughout California. As a teacher and former high school coach, Tom believes it is important to fight to ensure every neighborhood school has the resources required to provide every student with high-quality instruction in a safe and healthy environment. Tom believes our public education system—from early childhood education, preschool, K-12, and higher education—should be a priority for all Californians. He wants to help all of our students gain the skills they need, and the mind-set required, to succeed in either career or college.
