Sierra Club California Endorses Superintendent Tom Torlakson

SACRAMENTO -- Recognizing his lifelong commitment to environmental protection and education, Sierra Club California has endorsed teacher and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

"I am grateful to have the support of Sierra Club California, one of our state's premiere environmental protection organizations," Torlakson said.

Torlakson supported the development of California's Education and the Environment Curriculum, a landmark environment-based curriculum that teaches select California science and history/social science standards, addressing issues from resource use to climate change.

In addition, Torlakson brought environmental experts together with architects and school construction officials to examine how to better incorporate renewable and sustainable technologies into school building and modernization projects. The group's "Schools of the Future" report is designed to serve as a guide for local districts and the state to make new school projects more sustainable and to encourage the use of renewable energy sources at school facilities.

Torlakson also created California's annual Green Ribbon Schools awards program, which recognizes schools with outstanding environmental practices.
A second-generation public school teacher, Torlakson is seeking a second term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Torlakson uses his classroom experience to make schools safer, help more students graduate with real-world skills, and put more decision-making over education dollars in the hands in the hands of parents, teachers and communities.
